One Big Whale is hiring a freelance reporter to cover rich, local stories out of Northern Michigan—especially Petoskey and Emmet County. This is a long-term gig producing 1–2 deeply reported pieces per month.
You’ll be writing evergreen and semi-evergreen stories that explore the people, places, and events shaping life in Emmet, Charlevoix, Antrim, or Grand Traverse County. This role requires on-the-ground reporting, so you’ll need to live in or frequently travel to that region.
What They’re Looking For:
- A curious, empathetic journalist who digs deep and asks the hard questions
- Someone who loves storytelling—both narrative and investigative
- A writer who knows Northern Michigan well (the good and the not-so-good)
- Journalism students, freelancers, or career changers with solid reporting chops
Pay: $250–$500 per story, depending on reporting depth.
How to Apply:
Email Jim Malec at jim@onebigwhale.com. Share a bit about yourself, your background, and why you want the role. Include 1–2 strong writing samples if available.
