MelEdits, led by longtime editor and writer Melanie Padgett Powers, is expanding its roster of freelance writers for various membership association magazines. Most assignments pay a flat rate of around $1/word.
She’s specifically looking to diversify her pool of freelancers, so if you’re a writer from a marginalized group (person of color, neurodivergent, disabled, etc.), and you know your way around interviews, research, and storytelling — this is your lane.
What she’s looking for:
🔹 B2C Health Care Writers – Can you break down complex health topics for patients or consumers after talking to scientists or clinicians? That’s gold.
🔹 Science Writers – Deep science. Think neuroscience, physiology, cell biology. Can you hold your own in a conversation with a researcher and turn it into a compelling magazine feature for fellow scientists?
🔹 Mental Health Writers – Especially those who write for practitioner audiences. Narrative magazine-style storytelling is key.
🔹 Profile Writers – You know how to turn interviews with scientists and clinicians into rich, narrative-driven profiles — not just regurgitated bios.
💡 How to Pitch
Email Melanie at melanie@meledits.com with:
- A short cover letter or LOI introducing yourself

- A resume focused on writing experience
👉 Note: If you’re a middle-aged white woman, Melanie says you’re still welcome to apply!
Deadline: Rolling — send your LOI as soon as you’re ready.
