đź’¸ Write on Science, Power & Money | $100–$250 per article – Science for the People

Deadline: July 2, 2025

Science for the People is now accepting pitches for its next issue, The Political Economy of Science (Vol. 27, No. 2). This is a radical, international call for writers, artists, and thinkers who are ready to explore the deeper forces behind science—who funds it, who benefits, and who gets left behind.

This issue aims to unpack the political and economic power struggles that define how science is shaped, who controls it, and what knowledge is allowed to exist. Think less about how science is done, and more about why it’s done the way it is—and who profits.

Writers are invited to pitch articles that go beyond the surface. Topics might include:

  • The grip of venture capital on research
  • Corporate funding and its influence in academia
  • How public money funds private profits
  • The West’s domination of global scientific knowledge (IP laws, trade agreements, R&D disparities)
  • War, militarism, and imperialism as engines of scientific innovation
  • Global South perspectives and case studies that center power and resistance
  • Real alternatives to capitalist research models
  • Voices from the inside: grad students, techs, postdocs, staff scientists

Science for the People is especially looking for grounded pieces—case studies, first-hand experiences, and field-specific insight. Abstract theories won’t cut it here. They want real, lived realities that reveal how the machinery of funding and control limits, redirects, or reshapes the pursuit of knowledge. Bonus points if your perspective is from or about the Global South.

They’re not just seeking critique. This issue also welcomes ideas that imagine what science could look like beyond capitalism—beyond the status quo, beyond empire. Think bold. Think revolutionary.

🧠 Who should pitch: Scientists (STEM and social sciences), activists, postgrads, artists, tech workers, freelancers, and people in the humanities. No academic jargon—just sharp, radical, well-crafted stories for a broad audience.

✍🏽 How to Pitch

Submit your proposal through this Airtable form by July 2, 2025.
Your pitch should include a detailed outline (see sample), no longer than one page.

They’re open to feature stories, op-eds, reviews, artwork, and more. Read their full submission guidelines and pay rates here.

💰 Pay: $100–$250 per piece, depending on type and length.

This is a high-level opportunity for writers who want to challenge dominant narratives and be part of reshaping the future of science. If that’s you—get in, pitch strong, and represent the continent.
