Baffling Magazine is open for flash fiction submissions worldwide, a solid opportunity for writers looking for paid writing jobs, flash fiction markets, and speculative writing opportunities. They publish two to three original flash stories each month on their Patreon before releasing them to the public in quarterly issues and an annual anthology.
For the December window (1st–15th), they’re reading on the theme “timefuckery” as well as unthemed submissions.
What They’re Looking For:
- Wordcount: Under 1,200 words (they especially want stories under 500 words)
- Speculative stories in sci-fi, fantasy, horror, or anything weird, queer, or difficult to define
- Strong interest in queer, trans, and aro/ace narratives
- Slipstream, interstitial, and boundary-breaking storytelling
- Translations are welcome (payment split between author and translator)
What They Don’t Want:
- Unexamined bigotry
- Sexual violence unless handled with nuance and survivor-centered focus
Submission Guidelines:
- Submit in .doc or .docx in near-standard manuscript format
- Use modern fonts (editor prefers Georgia, dislikes Courier)
- Include a simple cover letter with title, length, short bio, and links
- No multiple submissions; if rejected during the window, you may try again
- Previously unpublished work only (including not on Patreon)
- All writers worldwide are welcome, with a strong encouragement for marginalized and underrepresented writers
- Expect slow responses; query after 120 days if needed
