Beauty Chronicles is commissioning writers for a new large-format, bilingual (French–English) print journal produced by a French beauty brand. The publication explores the intersections of plants, gardens, memory, beauty, and ecology, with an emphasis on cultural history, symbolism, and global perspectives.
Most commissions are reported or essayistic longform pieces (1,500–3,000 words). The journal will also include a limited number of short vignette-style pieces and one fiction slot. Writers may submit in English or French, with final publication appearing in a bilingual format.
The editor is particularly interested in work that blends literary writing, criticism, and ecological thinking, and welcomes pitches grounded in lived experience, research, and cultural memory.
What They’re Looking For:
- Longform reported essays or literary nonfiction
- Writing at the intersection of literature, ecology, beauty, and cultural criticism
- Strong narrative thinking with intellectual depth
- Writers from or rooted in the Global South, diasporas, and underrepresented communities
- Perspectives from BIPOC writers and LGBTQIA+ writers
Preferred Topic Areas:
- Seeds and migration (diaspora crops, plant routes shaped by empire and slavery)
- Herbalists and herbal traditions (including France and wider Europe)
- Floriography and the cultural language of flowers
- Shea butter and beauty ingredients as supply-chain and labor stories
- Low-carbon or “barefoot” architecture using plant-based materials
- Photo–text essays on flower markets, botanical archives, cyanotypes, and visual plant histories
Pitch Requirements:
- A brief introduction (who you are and where you’re based)
- 2–3 relevant writing samples (plants, gardens, ecology, food, architecture, symbolism, or related themes)
- A short note on the themes or topics you are most drawn to
This is a paid international writing opportunity suitable for writers searching for high-paying magazine pitches, longform writing jobs, literary essay commissions, and global publication opportunities.
