Pier Journal is seeking pitches for Volume 013, its Autumn/Winter 2026 edition, built around the theme “Becoming.”
This volunteer-run Dorset publication produces a free, bi-annual print journal featuring thoughtful stories about the people, places, businesses, events, and communities that shape Dorset. The editorial team is looking for original pitch ideas rather than completed manuscripts.
Writers, photographers, illustrators, and other creatives are invited to interpret the theme “Becoming” in unique ways. Possible angles could include personal transformation, evolving identities, ambitious projects becoming reality, social change, cultural shifts, or any compelling interpretation of the theme.
The publication welcomes:
- Feature articles
- Opinion pieces
- Personal essays
- Photo essays
- Illustrations
- Short stories
- Poetry
Pier Journal prefers timeless, meaningful stories that remain relevant long after publication. Editors are particularly interested in work that captures readers’ imagination and offers depth beyond the typical fast-paced online content environment.
Applicants must live, work, or have a genuine connection to Dorset. The publication is especially interested in hearing from writers covering West Dorset and North Dorset.
Payment ranges from £50 to £400, depending on the format and scope of the commissioned work. Due to limited editorial budgets, competition for paid placements is expected to be high.

- Samples of any images or illustrations (if applicable)
- An explanation of why the story fits Pier Journal
